Just a month and a half ago I was walking down bourbon st with my girlfriend drinking hand grenades and all sorts of other alcoholic mixtures. It was sunny and bright and very humid but the ambiance was energetic, loud, and full of laughter. Live music poured out of every bar and people were dancing to the best of jazz and r&b. Guys threw beads from second floors and people performed in the street. It was a beautiful site.
As I switched on my TV this morning I was disheartened to see that 80% of the city has been flooded because of hurricane Katrina. Buildings are ruined, homes have been lost, and people are scavaging to find whatever they can to keep them and their families alive during this time. The water is now toxic and must be boiled in order to be consumed, but thousands have no access to a stove to do so. The scene broke my heart. Very different from what I saw this summer.
So today, I will send them my prayers and good energy to perhaps someway, help them get through this tragedy.
I hope that many of you could just take a moment out of your day, even for just a minute, to do the same.
