yesterday I was sitting in my kitchen with greg watching it snow crazily, both me and greg staring intently at the storm, he just had the funniest expression on his face. I was reminded of this one scene in lord of the rings, the two towers. its at the beginning of the movie, when legolas, aragorn and the dwarf are running up and down on some hills, looking for orks, and aragorn says to legolas, "legolas! what do your elf eyes see?" I was reminded of this because I wanted to say, "Greg! What do your kitty eyes see?"
St. Valentine's Day has its roots in Roman culture (as early as 400 b.c!). As a form of rite of passage to the god Lupercus. Teenage roman boys would be able to pull the name of a teenage girl from a box and for the remaining year the two would be companions for mutual (sexual) pleasure and entertainment. The christian church wanted to put an end to this very popular and 800 year old pagan holiday by putting a christian twist on it. They made it into a Saint's day, and this is where St. Valentine comes in. Centuries earlier a roman emperor named Claudius II decided to ban marriage because it made his soldiers too sentimental and he needed them tough. Valentine was a christian who would secretly perform marriage rites on young couples. Valentine was caught, clubbed to death, and beheaded. While in jail though, he apparently fell in love with the jailer's blind daughter, and left her a farewell note siging it "Your Valentine". The church chose this martyr to be the spiritual overseer of this holiday in which young people would now choose a saint's name from a box, and for the next year they would have to try to live out that saint's life. This holiday was obviously not as popular.
2 more tidbits:
-cupid, in roman mythology, is the son of Venus, the goddess of love and beauty
-xxx, meaning kisses, has old roots as well. its religious because x is the first letter in the greek word for christ, xristos, and the x was used to mean a sworn oatch in a time when most people were illiterate and could not sign their own name. people used to kiss this x to show their sincerity, which is how it developed into what we use today
