Oh. My. God. How is it I never knew Beethoven composed a piece entitled "Wellington's Victory". It's like two of my favourite men coming together! :D

UPD: And I'm off to a concert to listen to the Scottish Symphony Orchestra perform Beethoven's first symphony and Mahler. :D And then I'll be going to a club where they are having a Russian night ( Read more... )

Aww, I grew up with the 1812 Overture and Wellington's Victory on the same disc, so I have a lot of sentimental fondness for it (and my mom taught me the words to "Marlbrough s'en va-t-en guerre" in it.) But as latin says, it's a very silly piece by Beethoven's usual standards. I think he just wanted to make up for dedicating Eroica to Napoleon earlier on.

I think it has cannons in it, and that along with having the theme of defeating Napoleon makes it often paired with 1812, in recordings at least. I've never heard it performed live (probably because it's so silly.)

Wait, haven't we had this conversation before...? *looks it up* Well, I have anyway! XD

I still haven't heard it, so can't comment on whether it's bad or good, but live cannon is badass for sure! XD
