Amongst the category of people that believe in the rights of animals, there tends to be a majority strain that is sane enough NOT to conflate the abuse of animals with the abuse of children.
While it is quite easy to see why the abuse of animals isn't favorable (Causing unnecessary pain and all that...), there's no reason why we should place it with equal standing to actions against humans.
One other thing:
People are not obligated to respect another person's beliefs, that is naive touchy-feely bullshit that doesn't belong in any serious intellectual discussion. If you let an idea slip into the aether, be prepared to have it skewered any which way. Freedom of speech and expression is a double edged sword. This idea of respecting an opinion regardless of its merits, is an example of this hypocritical relativism that has seemed to hold the free exchange of actual knowledge by its throat.
