I was raised attending both Lutheran and Catholic services with a strong scientific bent to my upbringing as well, so I was used to compromising science and the Bible and various aspects of Christianity early on. Somewhere in between confirmation (eighth grade) and the beginning of college, I lost my blind faith in God and Christianity. My first year of college I went through a short Wiccan phase and decided it wasn't for me. Last fall when I was in Ecuador, I went to a couple Catholic Masses, hoping I could believe in it again, because that belief really was a comfort when I believed it completely, but it couldn't be regained. Overall I've come to see organized religions as something unnatural, because belief is too subjective to be 100% true for every person.

I still feel like there is something greater than the visible going on, but I don't know what. Having worked with dead bodies, I believe that whatever soul or spark of life is there while we're alive goes somewhere else after death, though I don't know where. I feel great senses of mysticism and holiness of some sort in beautiful churches, breathtaking moments in nature, etc. I find religious art and architecture incredibly moving, despite not actually believing in the dogma.

I believe in science, in humanity, in beauty, in love.
