Writer's Block: The boogeyman, global thermonuclear war, being forced to eat broccoli-there's a lot to be afraid of when you're a kid. What was your biggest childhood fear?
A: Lots of weird things. Spiders, specifically spiders crawling down the chimney, out through the fireplace, down the hall, and into my bed.
I was convinced that the aliens from the movie Mars Attacks were going to come get my family.
The Haunted Mansion at Disneyland also scared the bajesus out of me the first time I went on it when I was 6 - I made my dad cover my eyes until it was not scary anymore (the only part I actually had my eyes open for was the ghost dinner party). Then at the end I opened my eyes to see the hitchhiking ghost sitting on my dads lap, so then I was scared that the ghost really was going to follow us back to San Ramon, then kidnap me and trap me in the Haunted Mansion where I would be the 1000 Happy Haunt.
I choked on a lifesaver when I was 5, so I was afraid of solid food for a couple of months. One bite would take 3-5 minutes of chewing before I would swallow.
