I always said I would never be that idealistic student teacher that's always smiling and giving bullshit lines like "great job!" or an over-enthusiastic "wow, that's awesome!". But these kids make me so happy. When the Asberger syndrome kid makes so much progress in an hour because we've learned together how to stay focused on a task, I get excited ( Read more... )

this kind of attitude is what all teachers should be striving toward

yes it's nice to encourage the kids with natural talent and ability and they do need the encouragement to show them what they can do with their intelligence. But it is our job to reach out to every singing student, especially the students with "special needs", so that they can achieve everything they are capable of. Many of those students don't have anywhere they can feel victorious, capable, and intelligent. It is our job as the next generation of teachers to make sure our classrooms can be that place for them.

I hope you get the chance to touch the lives of hundreds of other students the way you touched the lives of those two you talked about today.

You'll be an amazing teacher. Heck, you already are.
