Summary: Because after all love is not as simple as meeting someone and fall for that someone...
How long has it been, since the last time Yabu saw Inoo smiles?
Maybe it was around last year, on Hikaru’s birthday party. Because after that, they rarely meet each other. Until then they met again, it was on the day Hikaru passed away in the hospital because of a car accident.
Yabu can still remember how Inoo just quietly pull himself from the crowd of Hikaru’s family and walking away from there. Lifelessly. With his tears streaming down on his face.
Yabu tried to stop him but Inoo just kept walking. It was then when Yabu hugged him tightly from behind, Inoo stopped and broke down crying.
And Inoo never smile again ever since. It’s like he lost the will to live although in a glance he look like continuing his life.
He moved back to Yabu’s place because it feels too hard for him being in Hikaru’s place with the memories of the said guy scattered all over the corner. He’s still going to his classes, but once he got home, he’ll lock himself inside his room.
He’s spacing out a lot and his expression is blank most of the time. It’s like he’s there but he’s not there too in the same time.
But today, something is different.
Because when Inoo got out from his room this morning, a smile plastered on his face.
On the 1334th days he falls in love with him. A month after Hikaru passed away.
“Ohayou, Yabu~” he greeted him as he sat himself on his chair in the dining table, right in the opposite side of Yabu.
“O-ohayou,” Yabu greeted back, despite the way his head filled with so many question by Inoo’s sudden change of attitude.
As they started to eat their breakfast, Yabu stealed a glance at the latter for a few times. Somehow trying to make sure that it was not just a mere hallucination that Inoo is smiling right now.
But the smile is there. It’s real.
“You know…,” Inoo suddenly spoke up in the middle of their breakfast. “Hika came again last night,” he continued.
Yabu stopped eating his breakfast instantly right after Inoo finished his words.
“Hika… came again?”
“Un,” Inoo nodded. “Last night I fell asleep with my earphones on, because I was listening to my music player earlier. But then, when I woke up this morning, it’s already off of me.”
“This happened too on some previous night before. I thought it was me who unconsciously took it off. But a few night ago, I knew it’s indeed not me. Because I was half awake when he came and took it off for me.”
“H-how do you know it was him? Did you see his face?”
Inoo thought for awhile before shook his head. “But I knew it was him. Beside, he always do that to me,” Inoo said in no doubt.
“And I’m not quite sure how he did that, but he bought me a carton of my favourite apple juice everyweek. I was wondering of who might it belong to at first. But I remember you don’t drink juice and after I left the juice untouched for a few days, it’s still sealed.”
“That’s why, I started to drink them. And each time I ran out of the apple juice, the next day it’s already loaded again in the fridge.”
“It must be him,” Inoo stated. “It couldn’t be you, right? I mean, you don’t even know that I love to drink apple juice…”
“Have you done yet?” Yabu asked as he approached Hikaru whom still look confuse on deciding of which juice flavor to buy.
Since Inoo quite busy lately, Hikaru volunteered himself to do the shopping for the house. And off he went that day to the supermarket with Yabu.
“I was wondering what kind of juice Kei would like,” Hikaru mumbled while still looking at the line of juice’s carton in front of them.
“Maybe it’s orange juice, ne,” Hikaru said before stretching out his hand to reach for the orange juice’s carton.
But even before he managed to grab the orange juice’s carton, Yabu already took the apple one and shove it to him.
“It’s apple juice,” Yabu said to the confuse Hikaru. “Inoo-chan likes apple juice.”
“Or like the time I fell asleep on the couch of my room, I knew he’s the one who brought me to bed. I knew he’s the one who always go check up on me everynight and fixing up my blanket for me.”
Words by words, Yabu can feel like something sharp pierced right into him as he heard everything that Inoo said to him.
It is both heartbreaking. Seeing Inoo’s smiling along the way while telling this story to him and his eyes glinted with a lively sparks and the way he seemed oblivious about everything.
If only there’s any way so that Yabu can make Hikaru is the one who really did all of that to Inoo. If only there’s someway, any way to make Hikaru back to Inoo’s side, he’ll do it.
He’ll do it and everything might be much more better.
“I-it may seem irrational to you, I know. But he’s still here, Yabu…,” Inoo said again after a moment. “He never left me…”
But smiling bitterly is the one thing Yabu can do as he drop his head low.
--------------
It’s their last year at university. And Inoo has an interview today with one of a famous architecture firm to be the apprentice there.
He just finished his tie that morning when he spotted an omamori tangled on his bag. The bag is actually new, Hikaru bought it for him before the day of the accident and Inoo never really had a chance to use it nor take a look at it as it’s still inside its paper bag before. And he never realized that there’s an omamori attached on it.
Then a smile tugged on his face as he fingered the omamori.
“I know you always look out for me, Hika,” Inoo mumbled softly. “I will do my very best today at the interview.”
And Yabu can only watch.
The way Inoo caressed the omamori Yabu secretly attached to the latter’s bag very early this morning when Inoo is still sleeping.
He can only watch in silence from the little crack of Inoo’s bedroom’s door with a slight smile on his face. On the 1348th days he falls in love with Inoo.
“Ganbatte, Kei…,” he whispered.
------------
Day 1359th.
And Yabu was hiding, with Takaki and his boyfriend Daiki, inside his bedroom.
Leaving the living room in a dim light. A medium size fruit cake, some snacks and drinks already placed on the coffee table in the living room.
And they are all waiting.
Waiting for Inoo to come back home on this special day. The day Inoo got accepted by the architecture firm he had an interview with a few days ago.
Takaki, who happened to be accepted too in the same architecture firm with Inoo, informed Yabu earlier this day about it. And the three of them arranged a celebration party for Inoo all day.
It wasn’t long after that until they heard the front door of the apartment cracked open. Signaling Inoo has came back home. And they immediately prepared themselves to surprise Inoo.
They watched Inoo came inside and stopped on his feet as he saw the foods and drinks on the coffee table from the little space of Yabu’s bedroom door that opened slightly.
They’re about to come out from the bedroom when suddenly Inoo mentioned Hikaru’s name and Yabu halted in his position immediately, which pretty much blocking Takaki and Daiki’s way.
“What is it?” Takaki asked while whispering as he still oblivious about the situation. Yabu just put his index finger near his lips, asking Takaki to keep quiet before returning his gaze at Inoo.
They saw Inoo approached the coffee table and sat himself right beside it. He took a bucket of lilies that placed near the cake and a smile etched on his face.
“Hika, arigatou…,” Inoo whispered. “… for still throwing me a surprise party. I got the job, Hika.”
It was a whisper, but Yabu, Takaki, and Daiki could hear it perfectly. Takaki’s eyes widened in disbelief whilst Yabu could only drew another bitter smile.
“Yabu, he-” Takaki tried to speak but only to be cut in by Yabu.
“Let him be,” Yabu said, smiling weakly at his friends. “At least for now, let him be.”
--------------
The clock ticked midnight when Yabu entered Inoo’s room.
It has become his usual habit now, to go checking up on Inoo before he went to bed.
The room is dark when he entered in. And the only source of light came from the outside of the window. After quietly closing back the door, Yabu slowly made his way to Inoo’s bed. Trying as much as he can to not making any sound that can wake the sleeping boy up.
He cautiously took off the earphones that still attached on Inoo’s ear before wrapping Inoo’s figure securely with the blanket.
Although it’s dark in the room, but Yabu can see Inoo’s sleeping face and a smile made its way to his face. He turned his back to leave but a sudden grip on his hand, stopped Yabu from walking away.
“Hika?” Inoo asked with his sleepy voice.
How Yabu wish he is Hikaru this time. How much he wish he isn’t him.
“Hika, I missed you…,” Inoo said then tightening his hand around Yabu’s hand.
Yabu just stood there with no words to utter for he’s not Hikaru. He’ll never be Hikaru, although at times, he often wish he was him.
“Can you stay for awhile until I fell asleep?”
Hesitantly, Yabu interlinked their fingers around another before settled down himself beside Inoo’s bed.
“I love you, Hika,” Inoo mumbled as he closed his eyes with a smile that Yabu can vaguely see.
No reply was heard. The room stayed in silence for 20 minutes after Inoo said those words. 20 minutes… before Yabu had the courage to say those words he longed to say to Inoo…
“I love you, Kei…” Yabu whispered ever so lowly.
… on the 1365th days he falls in love with him.
Yabu said it.
Even though there’s just no way Inoo will know he said that. But he said it.
And it’s more than enough for him.
Yabu smile one last time at Inoo then laying down his head on the side of the bed before drifting off to sleep.
Missing a single tear that escaped from Inoo’s eyes after that as guilt rushed over him. Guilt because he lied, not only to himself, but to the people around him. To Yabu.
He knew it was Yabu who bought him apple juice everyweek. He knew it was Yabu who always check up on him everynight to make sure he took off his earphone and sleep well. He knew it was Yabu who fixed his blanket for him. He knew it was Yabu who’s striving hard to do everything he can to take care of him and get him back on his feet for he loves him that much.
But yet, he lied.
Lied because it feels too much without Hikaru beside him. Lied because it’s the only way everything becomes bearable enough for him.
And one single not with ‘Arigatou, Yabu…’ is the only thing he can give before he left Yabu’s apartment that dawn before the latter woke up from his sleep.
On that 1365th days Yabu falls in love with him.
On that very day Yabu said he loves him.
Inoo left him.
Because after all love is not as simple as meeting someone and fall for that someone. Even when you’ve done everything, every effort that worth, sometimes it’s not enough. Because many things involves in it.
Time, chance, place, everyone around you, and fate.
And fate might be the reason why the two of them can hardly be together.
