The first time Yabu Kota meets Inoo Kei was 2 years 12 days ago, on the month of September.
Yabu can never forget that day. The day he just got home and found Inoo’s figure standing on the balcony of his apartment. His shady eyes leering at the city view around the apartment building, his soft wavy hair was slightly waving by the autumn breeze as a streak of the warm afternoon sun dawned upon the dainty skin of his face.
He was silenced in daze to chance upon such pulchritude. Stunned for he didn’t even aware that Takaki, his college buddy who also happened to be his roommate in the apartment they share together, already stood beside him nor aware to the things Takaki said to him after that.
“Yabu, meet Inoo Kei, my architecture friend that I told you before, remember? He’s the one who’ll rent my room after I moved out with Daiki.”
Then by the time Inoo turned around to face him and smiled at him, it felt as if the time was stopping. It’s enganging. His smile is. That Yabu couldn’t help himself but to smile back at him.
It’s the day 1 he falls in love with the latter.
And it’s been 742 days ever since.
2 years 12 days.
Nothing much has changed except now the Inoo who relish to spend his free afternoon time on their balcony has become Yabu’s most favourite sight.
Yabu loves to see the way Inoo’s lips will curve upwards in a joyful smile when the calm wind blew pass him, the way he stares at the sky above, and the way he’d giggling when he spotted something interesting on the city crowd below, when Yabu watched him secretly.
And his smile… Yabu grew fond to that smile and it has becomes important to him as he fell for Inoo even more on each day, although it costed his heart to see Inoo’s smiling.
Because on the 488th days he falls in love with Inoo, exactly on the date of his birthday, January 31st, Inoo threw him a surprise party together with Yabu’s bestfriend.
Yaotome Hikaru.
It was after the party ended, just when they’re sending Hikaru to the door before he went home, Yabu noticed the loving stare and the secret gentle smile that were exchanged between Inoo and Hikaru as they bid each other goodbye.
It didn’t take Yabu too long before he finally unearth what’s going on between the two after he saw how Inoo’s cheeks flared with crimson.
“We’re dating now.”
That was what Inoo said when he realized Yabu has been looking at him after Hikaru left. Yabu could only smile while nodding his head at that time, saying ‘omedetou’ as he pats Inoo’s head before he made his way to his bedroom with his heart throbbing in pain.
But still, nothing much has changed. Even in a way Yabu has to witness the closeness between Inoo and Hikaru for many times, but as long as Inoo is smiling, that’s all it takes for Yabu to smile it off and soon the aching in his heart subside and he managed to endure it.
As long as Inoo is smiling.
Then he’ll be fine.
Even when he found Inoo’s suitcase all ready on the living room this afternoon once he got home, Yabu could only smile bitterly. He knew today will come eventually for Inoo already told him month ago that he’s moving out to Hikaru’s place right on the very 742th days Yabu falls in love with him.
Yabu just stood in silence there, not too far from Inoo whom still standing on their balcony. Capturing his most favourite sight for one last time.
Feeling someone’s looking at him, Inoo turned around and a smile carved on his face once he saw Yabu already there.
“Aa~~ you’re home!” Inoo greeted him.
“Un, tadaima~” Yabu said as he walked to the balcony and settled himself beside Inoo.
“Okaeri~~” Inoo replied.
“I thought you left already.” Inoo smiled at him and shook his head.
“I was waiting for you,” he said. “We’ve been roommates for what? More than two years, deshou? There’s no way I can leave just like that without seeing you first…”
Yabu just let out a small chuckle by hearing that. Then they spend some time in quietude for a brief moment, drowning themselves in the view of the city.
“Uwaaa~, I’ll miss this place so much,” Inoo broke the silence after awhile.
“Hika’s place has a balcony too, right?”
“But it’s not as quiet as here. And the view pretty much blocked by the other buildings,” Inoo reasoned out with a slight pout on his lips.
“Then don’t go… stay…”
If only words can be spoken so easily, those words are what Yabu might really wants to say to Inoo right now. But he can’t. He doesn’t have the right and reason to make Inoo stay in the first place.
“Jaa, just come over whenever you missed this place,” Yabu offered. Inoo’s eyes glimmering in that instant upon hearing those words.
“Hontou?” Yabu nodded his head. “But don’t go grumbling on me if I end up coming too often here,” Inoo warned.
“I won’t,” Yabu assured. Inoo beamed gleefully at him.
“It’s a promise then!” Inoo exclaimed and Yabu nodded with no hesitation.
Inoo dug inside his jeans pocket before handing out his spare key to Yabu.
“And I guess, I should give this to you now.”
Yabu kept quiet for awhile, staring at the key on Inoo’s hand.
“You know, why don’t you keep your spare key with you, so you don’t have to wait for me whenever you want to come over,” Yabu suggested.
“Eeee? But soon you’ll have another roommates, right? This spare key belongs to that person.”
“Hmmm…,” Yabu pretended to think hard. “We’ll figure that out later,” he answered lightly.
“But, Yabu-”
“Ii yo, just take it with you. This might come in handy when you missed this place too much already,” Yabu convinced.
Inoo smiled at him. Those same smile that greeted him on the first time they met. That same smile that he dears a lot. And because of that smile, he let go of him.
And much to Yabu’s surprise, Inoo suddenly had his arms wrapped around him in a tight hug.
“Arigatou, Yabu,” Inoo said. “For being a great roommates for me all this time,” he added then. Yabu just nod his head slightly while returning the hug.
And when Inoo release the hug and stare at him with his widest smile, Yabu put on his most sincere smile at him.
“Take care, Yabu. I’ll see you around.”
That’s the last words from Inoo before he drag his suitcase with him and left Yabu alone.
