There are big dogs, and then...

There's Titan.

On Thursday, however, the Guiness Book of World Records officially named Titan the Great Dane the World’s Tallest Dog. He received the honor at an official ceremony. Given the way records to do with physical characteristics work, it’s unknown how long Titan the Great Dane will continue to be the World’s Tallest Dog. Titan stands 42.25 inches from floor to shoulder and weighs 190 pounds. Unlike the image of Marmaduke, the comic strip Great Dane, Titan doesn’t stand on his hind legs; it isn’t good for him.

Since being crowned “World’s Tallest Dog,” on Thursday by Guinness World Records, Titan, a 4 year-old Great Dane, has appeared on the Today Show and The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien.

Taylor (Titan’s owner) hopes to use Titan’s newfound fame to help the public learn more about Great Danes and especially those that are all white. “Unscrupulous breeders will sell these all white dogs as ‘exotic and beautiful’ without telling people that the dogs are often deaf,” says Taylor, who has another blue-eyed, all white rescued Great Dane named Ari, who who had been given up by the original owner. “The shelters are full of dogs like Titan and Ari.”

Taylor adopted Titan through Petfinder.com, the largest online database of adoptable animals at shelters and rescue groups across the country. He was three months old and already weighted 55 pounds. “I had no idea Titan would be so tall,” says Taylor. “But he just kept growing.”

Initially, Titan had partial sight and Taylor taught him basic obedience using hand signals. As he went totally blind, Taylor began using touch. “Titan is my first Great Dane,” says Taylor. “What I love about the dogs besides their size is their demeanor. They have a good temperament. They love people and dogs, even small dogs. They love everybody.”
