The Cow

A third grade teacher taped a picture of a barnyard to her chalkboard, and on the desk in front of it were treats for her students. She told the class to come up to the picture and
invited them to find the cow in it. When they found the cow, they were to take their seats. When everyone had found the cow they would all share the treats.

There was not much action among the students for a moment, then one boy said he had found the cow and sat down.

One after another, the young students found the cow in the picture and took their seats.

Finally, a boy and girl stood at the chalkboard, still looking for the cow. Quietly, shyly, the girl said, "I see it," and sat down.

The boy fidgeted nervously. The teacher prodded him. "Can't you see the cow?" She asked impatiently.

The boy, tearfully, admitted he could not. The teacher turned to the class, her arm on the child's shoulder, and said, "Here is an honest boy. There is no cow in the picture."

Peer pressure has such an overwhelming impact on our choices.
