Food Storage Monthly Focus:

Oct 11, 2005 15:04

To help encourage all of us to add to our food storage, I will be focusing one post per month toward helping us to meet a goal to add to our personal food storage. This can be a great opportunity to actually start a food storage, or just to improve upon one you already have. Do what you can, don't stress yourself out about it... even if you only add one item that is working toward a goal to have a complete food storage. (I'm going to try and do this too, so pick what you can.)

This month we are focusing on storing yeast, baking soda, and baking powder. These are basic baking items to use with your food storage and are very important in giving you some variety and ability to bake with your grains. Store 1/2 pound yeast, 1 pound baking soda, and 1 pound baking powder per person, per year.

The non-food item we are storing is medicine that your family needs. Keep over-the-counter medications that your family needs and uses in a cool dry place. Be sure to check expiration dates often. For prescription medications, it is often difficult to obtain 'extras' for storage. Make a habit of refilling your prescription medications as soon as you are able to each month or however often you refill them. That way you know you will always have enough to get your through at least a few days. With your food storage and emergency supplies, keep a list of all prescription and over-the-counter medications you take (drug name, dosage, how often you take it, ect.) so that in case of emergency you could inform someone of exactly the medications you need.
