Just go slow :-)

Have you done a lot of paper-cutting before?

Heh, yeah, I actually used to do a lot of paper cutting for my textile design classes. I never thought to do this kind of thing, though.

Textile design classes, cool! Well there you go then, potential bloodshed averted.

It's how hard I press on the knife that'll kill me, bad habit.
Do you sketch out first?

For these it's a mix of printing the image (which serves as a rough guide) and sketching very lightly on the back of the paper. Some parts I just freehand, like the scarf fringe in #1, and other areas if I have a pretty clear idea how I want them to be.

Maybe I'll go find The Book of Lost Things and do some paper fanart of that, it seems like it would be a fitting style. Thanks for the insight and encouragement!

You're welcome :-)

Also, maybe you already know this, but a new blade can help with the pressing-too-hard thing, because it takes less pressure to make a clean cut.

It's just a bad habit I developed from having double jointed fingers. I don't do it if I am thinking about it, but as soon as I am concentrating on the work instead of my hand, I press hard again.
