emilie and the hollow world by martha wells

this is pitched as a YA book and it does have a younger protagonist but it's not filled with sparkly vampires or anything that's part of the YA trendiness. it's more of a rip-roaring yarn sort of book. emilie has run away from her aunt and uncle for reasons that become clearer and clearer as the book progresses. she is trying to get to the school where her cousin works, but runs out of money and tries to stowaway on a ship...only she winds up on the wrong ship and is taken on a journey to a world that exists at the center of our world. hijinx ensue, as i like to say of these things.

this isn't the deepest book ever, but i like emilie and i liked martha wells' world building, as i always do. it's a fun read--not as appealing to me as her ile-rien books or the raksura books, but i'll definitely be getting the next one when it comes out.
