No Abstinence-only programs in our classrooms!

The Massachusetts House is debating and voting on the state budget this week! Send an email right away to be sure that women and families have the health care services they need and that we don't have risky abstinence-only programs in our classrooms.

What's At Stake?

  • Amendment #219 sponsored by Rep. Ruth Balser, which prohibits the use of state and federal funding for classroom-based abstinence-only programming.  I fully support abstinence as part of a comprehensive sex education program.  However, research has demonstrated that abstinence-only classroom curricula often communicate medically inaccurate, harmful and misleading information to teenagers.  Abstinence-only classroom programs promote ambivalence about the effectiveness of condoms in preventing pregnancy and STDs so that teenagers are less likely to use condoms or other contraceptives when they do become sexually active.
  • Amendment #1386 sponsored by Rep. Tim Toomey, which will ensure adequate funding for family-planning services for low-income women.

  • TAKE ACTION!
