With her, he was completely naked.
Everything else was stripped away. With the clothing went the rest of the world, the noise and distortion and bullshit that came from all sides, the relentless hassle and guile, the sense that life was made up of nothing more than a bouncing back and forth between what he wanted and what fate was willing to give him.
As long as she was here, none of that existed. This was his sanctuary, and he worshipped before his goddess. Her luminous skin was flushed with watercolor pink in the most interesting places, her long hair rippled and shimmered like a lavender waterfall, and in her violet eyes, he saw himself more clearly than he ever had before.
Despite her ethereal, porcelain beauty, she was made of steel, while he only pretended to be. From the time he was ten years old, he’d been tasked with being brave, strong, protective, never showing weakness or need, taking care of everyone while no one took care of him. Everything had to be taken in stride, with stoic acceptance, a steadfast wall against the storms.
After fifteen years, he was afraid he couldn’t do it anymore, and even more afraid to admit it.
He was the one who was vulnerable, fragile, about to break.
In this place, with her, he was safe. In her arms, he could fall to pieces.
Then, as her warmth and smile still lingered, he could pull himself back together and face the world again.
