Who: Shane and Carlson.
Where: His family house.
When: May 14, after graduation.

Carlson couldn’t believe that she hadn’t cried at all that day. She had teared up when she got dressed in her graduation outfit and Emily had hugged her, she teared up when she finished that speech she had been forced to make in front of everyone, she teared up when she crossed the graduation bridge and looked out into the crowd, hopeful to see her parents or her brothers having had surprised her and seeing nobody. She teared up afterwards when everybody was saying goodbye to her, hugging her and joking around and kissing cheeks and exchanging vital contact information. But she didn’t cry. Carlson didn’t cry in public, didn’t show emotion that was so negative, and today wasn’t an exception. Sometime after everybody went to go see their families, Shane had pulled Carlson away from Emily, Anthony, and Jason, so that he could introduce her to his family. His mom was actually very sweet, as were his sisters, and his brother-in-law was even dreamier up close (though Carlson made it a point to hardly glance at him while Shane’s family was talking to her). When Shane’s mom found out that nobody from Carlson’s family had made it to her graduation, she had been in disbelief, and immediately invited Carlson over to their house to celebrate with them. Carlson was stuttering about not wanting to impose and Shane was going on about how they already had plans, but his mom insisted. So instead of changing into her party outfit, that’s how Carlson found herself on her way to the Newman household. Shane didn’t seem too incredibly relaxed with Carlson being at the family house, but inside Carlson was elated. Family was so big to her, and the fact that her boyfriend’s family wanted her to celebrate graduation with them instead of being family-less on the big day was the sweetest thing.

Carlson had been super worried that his family wouldn’t like her, but they seemed to warm up to her okay. If Shane had had all brothers, Carlson would have known she had it made, but he had four sisters, and girls were known to be much cattier and judgmental. But they seemed sweet enough, asking her questions about herself that were probing but not so probing that she was uncomfortable, and soon enough, Carlson felt really relaxed and giddy at the way things had turned out. His sisters seemed to be enjoying the opportunity to tease Shane mercilessly, telling story after story about stupid stuff Shane had done or said, obviously trying to embarrass him, while his mother would chastise them for making fun of him. Shane was obviously not feeling the love from his sisters’ teasing, but Carlson just laughed and enjoyed the conversation, teasing him a little bit herself and even divulging the whole gay Jeremy story. After celebratory dinner and dessert, Shane’s mom insisted that Carlson stay the night. It wasn’t even raining, but her logic was that it was dark and graduation night, and the likelihood of drunks being on the road was higher, and she didn’t want them driving. Carlson and Shane both tried turning her down, Carlson much more gently, but his mom was firm and Carlson ended up being shown around the upstairs by one of Shane’s sisters and handed a giant t-shirt and a pair of shorts for pajamas. Before changing, Carlson tried to help Shane and his mother with the dishes, but she was shooed upstairs to get settled in for the night, his mom saying that Shane was plenty help. Carlson felt bad that they had been so hospitable and she wasn’t helping clean up, but she didn’t want to argue and did as told.

Upstairs, Carlson changed into the borrowed pajamas and got ready for bed - washing off her makeup, combing out her hair, brushing her teeth with a toothbrush they provided. She was definitely glad that she wasn’t one of those girls who cared if guys saw them without makeup. It wasn’t like she even wore much in the first place, but it would have been even more awkward for her to be spending the night if that was the case. Somehow, all four of his sisters and Summer filtered into the room and they started talking girl-talk, actually bonding a little bit, telling even more stores about Shane that they hadn’t been able to tell in front of their mother, and Carlson fishtail braided Shane’s youngest sister’s hair for her. After over an hour passed and everyone started heading out to their respective rooms, since it was past midnight, Carlson decided to go talk to Shane before turning in. His room was right across from the one Carlson was staying in, and the door was slightly ajar. She knocked, pushing it open to see him lounging on his bed, the light still on and clearly not asleep. “Hey.” She smiled, leaning against the doorframe. He motioned for her to come inside, so she did, pushing the door almost completely closed behind her. She took a seat on the edge of his bed. “So, your family is really sort of amazing. You had me all worried.” She laughed, tucking her hair behind her ear. “I’m actually really glad we skipped the party and did this. This was much more fun.” Carlson really had enjoyed herself, probably more then she would have at her party. She probably would have gotten drunk and emotional over graduation and the fact that she was in her family house but no family was there, and probably would have holed up somewhere in a locked bedroom so that no one could see her upset. But spending time with Shane's family was making her feel so much better. It was probably just because it was a big family and Carlson was such a family person, but she really did enjoy herself.
