When: Valentine's Day.
Whom: Gabe and Stella.
Where: It changes a lot so let's just say the world.
Gabe had a smile on his face as he tumbled out of bed this morning. It was five am and as usual, no students were awake at this hour. Which was exactly why Gabe woke up. He had planned - like he usually did - to surprise Stella for Valentine’s Day. He had told her that he wanted to stay in and just cuddle in bed or attempt to fall asleep, simple things like that because he thought that it was a silly holiday. What he had actually planned to do was to prepare a treasure hunt for her. It sounded like something children did, but it was the only idea Gabe had came up with. Everything else was the usual - dinner, roses, cheesy lines and big smiles. That, of course, was still going to happen. He just wanted to make their first Valentine’s Day (and three month anniversary) together special. Gabe had bought more than four gifts. His excuse for spending more than two thousand on her was because it was two occasions, both Valentine’s and their anniversary. Of course, Gabe wouldn’t be a fool and actually tell her how much everything cost. She would guess, like she usually did, and Gabe would tell her a number that was way off the real amount. It was just how Gabe celebrated. He planned big. Gabe yawned and put on his nerd glasses - glasses from Stella, which he still thought that she bought because she wanted him to look like Joe Jonas - then changed into his
outfit (ohohsee: minus the red vest. ew.) for the day. After he brushed his teeth, he made sure that his hair was perfect. Gabe grabbed his stuff and double checked that he had the key to Stella and Lia’s dorm in his back pocket. He had to tell Lia what he was doing to get the key from her. Gabe took his time as he walked to the next building. He knew his way to Stella’s dorm. When he got to the door, he smiled at the lack of post its. They had taken their time the next day and took off the post its, Gabe rearranging all of them on each of Stella’s arms so it looked like she had wings. They practically reenacted the ‘If you’re a bird, I’m a bird’ scene. Gabe stuck his key in and turned the knob slowly, careful not to wake anyone up. Not that he could. Stella couldn’t be woken up unless someone was shouting in her ear. Or in Gabe’s case, kissing her. He grabbed a post it from Stella’s desk and wrote ‘Good morning, sunshine. Happy Valentine’s Day.’ before sticking it carefully on her forehead. Gabe spent the next five minutes arranging an arrow on the floor with Twix bars pointing towards the door. There was another post it on the Twix bars - ‘I think we have great chemistry’. Hopefully she would realize that Gabe was referring to Chemistry and go to the Chem lab. He programmed her alarm so it played Toothpaste kisses at exactly nine thirty. Gabe kissed her lightly on the cheek then took his stuff and left to set the clues elsewhere.
All Gabe did the whole morning was move from place to place while setting up his clues. Each place had a little present for Stella. The Chemistry lab, where Gabe had asked Dreamer to help hand Stella his iPhone, had Godiva chocolates . The cafeteria had gold trimmed roses that were supposed to be able to live forever, along with a ring with an inscribed Shakespeare quote. The library had a heart necklace. The park had a bracelet with Stella’s favorite bible verse, plane tickets, and of course, Gabe himself. It might seem ridiculous for Gabe to buy so many things for just one day, but he couldn’t imagine doing it otherwise. He was just like this. Each place also had a clue that led to the next place, which Gabe had spent a whole week thinking of. The iPhone was supposed to have Coffee Break on replay, and if Stella thought into the lyrics, it should remind her of the cafeteria. In the cafeteria was a quote about books and shelves, which would lead her to the library. In the library, there was a book of Robert Frost poems, and one special one was supposed to take her to the park. He had planned to bribe some kids to take a message bottle and a key to her at the park, which would eventually lead her to the ultimate treasure: a treasure chest and Gabe. He had everything planned out. Usually he didn’t even celebrate Valentine’s Day. What he would normally do was go to a club, where there would be plenty of lonely hearts, party the night away and in the end wake up in a hotel room with a hot stranger beside him. Tonight was different, of course. After Stella finally ‘found’ him, he would take her to his house near the school and make her lunch. They could play in the snow then cozy up by the fireplace afterwards. Lily had a Valentine’s Party that Stella and Gabe had promised to attend, so Gabe didn’t want to make things messy and attempt to drive her somewhere else. If all things go well, after the party they could go out for dinner and hopefully - fingers crossed - Gabe would be able to take her back to his dorm. The whole day didn’t sound very magical in Gabe’s mind, but he tried his best. There were only a few things you could do in Connecticut. It wasn’t like New York. In New York, he could’ve took her to some fancy restaurant, then to a Broadway show. That was what Gabe had done the day before, just to make up for today. They went to Serendipity, the restaurant with the famous golden sundae that cost a grand. They saw whatever was on Broadway that day, but mostly ended up making out and smiling at each other like fools in love. They went to meet Stella’s cousin, Serenity, who was one of the coolest girls ever. They had dinner with Gabe’s mom at some fancy French restaurant. Gabe’s father wasn’t there. Gabe never saw him other than on holidays, nor did he want to. In conclusion, yesterday was more the day Gabe would’ve pictured as Valentine’s Day, rather than today. Obviously he wasn’t pleased with what he had to work with - Connecticut.
Gabe was sitting on a bench behind a bunch of trees, listening to his playlist for Stella, waiting for Stella to pick up on all of the clues and finally arrive at the rose bush. There were a few couples walking in the park, more seniors than there were couples his age. Valentine’s Day made it seem like love was in the air. In a way, seeing all of these couples around him reassured Gabe that he was on the right track. He loved Stella, she loved him back, and he knew that someday he would marry her. Just simply that thought made him smile. Gabe closed his eyes and took a short nap for a while, never able to sleep for too long because of his insomnia. After an hour or so, Gabe saw something familiar out of his eye. Blonde hair, exactly the right shade, shining exactly like how Stella’s hair shone underneath the sun. Stella was here. She figured out his clues. Gabe found two little boys, probably one five and one eight, and took out two chocolate bars. “Hey boys. Mind doing me a favor? See that pretty lady over there?” He pointed Stella out to the kids, and they nodded. “Give this to her for me, please. And here.” Gabe handed the kids the stuff and the chocolate bar, reminding them to be careful and come straight back to him after the girl received them. “Oh, and don’t tell them where I am! We’re playing hide and seek.” They gave him an understanding nod, and with the stuff in their hands, the boys ran off towards her. They came back shortly after, Gabe patted their heads and told them that they did a good job. Proud of themselves, the kids ran off to play in the playground. Gabe crouched down behind the trees, making sure that when Stella found the rose bushes right across from them, she wouldn’t find him. He ran his hand through his hair as he waited. Gabe had a white rose in his hands and two plane tickets in his back pocket. A white rose meant ‘one true love’, or something close to that, which was what Gabe knew that Stella was. He knew that she wouldn’t realize the true meaning of it, like the dozen of red roses he sent her at school. Still, he liked doing these things, and maybe someday Stella would remember and google it. The plane tickets were for spring break, because Stella had asked him if he wanted to go to Ireland with her. Gabe figured that he could be a step ahead. Finally, Stella found the rose bushes and the treasure chest Gabe had placed there. After he saw that she read the note, Gabe quietly stood up and walked out of his hiding spot. He held out the white rose, grinning. “Happy Valentine’s Day, baby.”
