Who: Calvin and Magenta
Where: Seniors English classroom
When: Immediately after English class (Monday)

Calvin was confused. English, not being one of the hard sciences, was certainly not one of his best classes - by which he meant he would receive marks between 90 to 100 percent, rather than from 95 to 100 percent - but he wasn't doing so badly that he should be required to stay behind after the class was over to talk to the teacher's assistant about his marks. And yet Ms. Reynolds had asked him to stay behind, while the other students - none of whom were capable of functioning at his level academically - were free to go.

He packed up his things slowly and meticulously once she announced that they were free to go (except him), looking determinedly at the inside of his messenger bag. He adjusted the collar of his shirt afterward, for lack of better things to do, and finally stole a glance upward towards the desk at the front. He looked down quickly before she could notice, and pulled at the hem of his shirt nervously.

"Uh. May I ask why I've been kept behind?" he asked tentatively. He was afraid of the answer, as his academic career meant the world to him, though he highly doubted that it was in jeopardy. He was almost certain - 97 percent certain - that he had aced the last quiz, despite the fact that the curriculum here was slightly ahead of that of his last school. Of course, there was always margin for error.
