sO....
...I suppose mixed feelings might sum it up best. I fear if one has NOT read the book, this movie will probably confuse the hell out of them at best, and suck majorly at the worst.
Of course, as one who HAS read the books, there were plenty of geek out squee moments, and some things that I thought were handled VERY well.
The action sequences were sexxay..YAY for the chaos at the World Cup! YAY! For all the task scenes and YAYAYAYAYAYAY! For the Grave Yard! Voldemort was AWESOME...I want JK to write more scenes for him JUST so I can see them on film..BRILLAINT casting job yo...
Other things I enjoyed:
The Port Key warp! VERY spiffy interpretaion..melikie...
The fact that this was the first movie were Hogwarts felt like a real school with real kids in it..
Woe teenage angst! I just ADORED the "finding dates" scenes, so well handled!
NEVILLE! WOW! After 6 books, and it took THIS movie to really warm up to him...practicing dancing in his room! OMG SQUEE!!!!! He and Ginny just make me go "awwww" now! LOL!
RON!! OMG! Rupert GINT! I love you! He does Ron SO well, and I thought he really out did himself. He might not be the Ron I imagine in a physical sense, but he sure acts exactly like him! (also, for the record, the hair actually grew on me....all Weasleys apparently look good in long hair..Molly must be beside herself....)
Voldemort..yum yum..more please! I cannot wait to see the end of movie 5 now!
Ghost!lily and ghost!James! I ADORED this scene in the book, and to see it on screen really tugged at my heart! It's just such a touching moment! (but James still came out first didn't he?)
Snape in Study Hall scene = Glee!!!!
And as always, the sets, the costumes and the creature design...just....yay!
But there WERE issues that bugged the hell out of me...
UGH! WTF!! Where the HELL were the transitions?! ESP in the beginning of the movie! I KNOW if someone had not read the books, they were going to get REAL confused REAL fast. For example, the first scenes of the movie ran something like this: "OMG weird house! Wait it's the Burrow (maybe?)..OMG! Quidditch World Cup..what the?! Now we're on a train! And suddenly chariots are arriving at at castle...when did we get to Hogwarts??etc etc etc." It wouldn't have killed them to add SOME context inbetween.... I get the feeling that they edited this movie assuming most of the audience had read the book, and while that is probably true, I personally think thats abit TOO lazy (and for the record I saw the movie with my hubby, who has never touched a Potter book in his life, and he was more than a bit confused in many parts..so I'm not just making this up.. ;)
Also....WTF!!! WHAT is up with the weird H/Hr? I don't get it! The movies seem to cling to it with such a passion.... I'm beginning to think tha they don't feel Rupert is attractive enough to get any screentime with Emma, so they stick Harry in there. Of course, if you read this journal you know my OTP so perhaps it's jus bias speaking...
And speaking of Emma..she is NOT my Hermione...not even close. I mean I see book!hermione here and there but mostly it seems Emma is playing herself on screen and it bugs the hell out of me. The BEST part about Herm is that she is a nerdy studious bookworm, that she isn't some hip-hugger fashion trend wearing gen-exer who happens to be smart...Gah! And PLEASE FRIZZ HER HAIR OMGWTFBBQ!! I will let the buck teeth slide if you JUST make an ATTEMPT to nerdify her a bit! PLEASE!
And Mad Eye Moody STILL = Dirty CRAZY Hobo with a dime store eye. Seriously, we get a horntail dragon, and a magical undersea world and the best they can do is a jokestore plastic ball that spends half the time functioning as a NORMAL eye and not "whizzing" about in the least?! FRUSTRATION!!! I'm so sad this is the only Moody my hubby will ever know...he's SUCH a cool character..
Ah well.....all in all it was a Potter Movie, and it wasn't the worst one (CoS anyone?). Honestly I don't think any movie could have done this book properly..unless it was like 24hrs long with abudget out the wazooo. But I was glad to see an attempt made to put it on screen. Personally I always have prefered to read the books, the movies have always seemed kind of like an authorized Fanfiction to me... So as such GoF did not dissapoint too much. And I will proabaly be buying the DVD when it comes out! *geek* ;)
