yeah, that's it. maybe its not a very satisfying ending, but its just supposed to be ironic that the guy he was supposed to kill saved his life. i think i'll rework the ending.

you should make mario a black belt in BJJ and he sees his friend being beat with a bat, and an epic grappling match ensues. because that would work great against a bat.

No, I like the ending very much. Very short and to the point. The irony is there and doesn't have to be beat into the reader. I like short stories that have rather abrupt and somewhat unsatisfying endings.

Did they deny it because of the nature of the content, or did they just plain not like it? I thought it was good.

they did not say. they were pretty curt about it actually. perhaps both, but i think it was a factor that all of the entries i sent in were pretty "transgressional". i looked at the stuff they chose and it's all pretty mild. i think I'd like to start a lit magazine specifically for more edgy content.
