question for cat lovers

Do cats sense pain/problems in their owners?

I know that our last dog did -- whenever my dad was sick, she'd sit with him ALL DAY LONG. She would NOT leave his side until she knew he would be OK. And it was really really sweet. She knew that he was HER pack leader, and she did what she felt she needed to to make sure he was OK.

My cat has been on a very very serious me kick lately, to the point where she's following me around constantly (she actually stayed in the room drinking water while I was cooking and doing dishes last night, and she's a very private drinker/eater). Right now she's under my legs. Last night, Chris and I were sitting on the couch together, and she wouldn't leave my lap. I even complained that she was hurting my leg, so Chris took her, and she refused to stay with him. When he's home alone, she ignores him.

WTF? Is she just going through a phase? Does she secretly know she's going to be spending a lot of time with me coming up and she's practicing? (Hee.) Or is she mothering me, as such?

cat, owie
