Daddy's Update from the Galapagos

Jan 31, 2006 17:39

As I mentioned earlier, my mom and dad are currently on a cruise in the Galapagos. My dad actually emailed Tori, Bree, and I today:

Hey Girls,

I am emailing you from the Xpedition, ay sea, cruising the islands. This morning, Mom and I hiked among the tortoises at 1500 ft on Santa cruz island. They move in slow motion and grunt and wheeze when we approach, but otherwise dont mins being the subject of photos. The land where theyre found up high is verdant woodland with cleared fields, which they prefer, looking not unlike east texas. In sharp contrast, the country at sea level is desert like Arizona, conplete with cactus and blistering sand.

So far, weve seen miriad sea lions, marine iguanas, land iguanas in breeding season that are resplendant in the gold coloring of the males, and smaller lava lizards. Everywhere, there are birds galore! Most notable have been the magnifcent frigate birds with their red guttural pouches, and comical boobies, both blue footed and whitemasked. All of the animals, without exception, are so tame that you will trip over them if youre not alert. Yellowstone animals are spooky wild by comparison.

This afternoon, were doing our first snorkling, and the crew is giving a talk on sharks as I write.....no sharks in these waters are dangerous. If you have a map handy, weve been to Seymour and San Cristbal, and Espanola islands. Today is Santa Cruz. Tomorrow, who knows.

The weather is quite warm and the strong glaring sun mandates liberal use of sun screen. Everyone sweats like pigs on the hikes, but the animals make each trip worth every bit the suffering.

I hope things are going well for all of you in Texas. They only allow us 20 min on the single computer, and the location of the keys on the keyboard is truly mysterious....European maybe.

If I get another chance, I will update again.

Love you,
Daddyt

While reading it, I was wondering why he was making so many typos, and now I know.

I looked up the weather in the Galapagos and it's currently 84 degrees. Makes our 70 degree weather seem fantastic.
