Long time, no post... Truth be told, there's not been much sense in posting lately. I don't do anything very exciting, and my boring, rather pathetic life isn't worth mentioning. However, several exciting things have happened in the last month or two:
~another one of my good HS friends got engaged right after Xmas, and I'm going to be a bridesmaid!! Wedding is set for early next year, color of choice - navy blue...
~my parents bought furniture for the basement, which we've been in the process of finishing since last March/April. It's a full set of dark blue leather furniture, which compliments the speckled carpet very well.
~Along with the basement furniture purchase was my new mattress. The mattress I have been sleeping on was the same one my sister and I shared when our brother was born, 17 years ago. So, as you can imagine, it had all sorts of wonderful stains on it; not to mention a dip in the middle similar to the Grand Canyon!
~Last Friday, my parents went out and bought a flat-panel TV, and signed up for DirectTV (no, we've never had cable TV)
I know what you're probably thinking - all this new stuff all of a sudden - it's huge! I think my dad is going through a mid-life crisis. I mean, he's awful when it comes to buying something. He thinks that a pair of jeans shouldn't cost any more than $20, so he flips out when he sees the credit card bill every month. But anyway, that's all very exciting, and will be even more so once we get the DirectTV hooked up on Saturday!
I made a major career-goal change recently, deciding to go the route of a copy editor. For one thing, it's an actual position that I'll be going after. Before, I didn't have a very clear idea of what to do with my degree. For another thing, this is more my style - I love all aspects of language - so I won't get bored with it. As a copy editor, I will have access to a broad range of topics, which also suits me just fine. I will constantly be learning about new ideas and people. I'm actually excited about the job hunt now! That's saying something! So if any of my readers out there know someone who knows someone, or whatever - let me know! Oh, and the other thing about a copy editor: I can move anywhere - ANYWHERE - and find a job.
Ok, I know how much reading this has been, and mostly about me...so, not too exciting perhaps. But I'll cut it off there. More to come, hopefully!!
Book of the moment: Effi Briest, by Theodor Fontane
Effi is a young woman of 15 living in Germany in the 1880's when she is married to Geert von Innstetten, a baron and Landrat in Prussia. Oh, and he's 21 years older than Effi. I read this book as required reading in my German History class two years ago, and liked it OK. But I figured it was time to read it again, from a different perspective. I read the introduction, and really, there are so many subtleties throughout the book that I was not aware of before. The age gap is presented in so many different ways, along with the political issues of the time. It is set in the time of Prince Bismarck, who Innstetten works for, so there are several political passages in the book. However, it is merely the tale of a young, very imaginitive woman who wasn't loved enough by her much older husband. The book is modeled after a real person - Elisabeth Baroness von Plotho, 1853-1952 - who was only 5 years younger than her husband. I will update on how I find the book when I've finished it.
