Some thoughts regarding the upcoming Golden Compass movie…
I watched the trailer for it a number of weeks ago, and since then I’ve been having mixed feelings about it. On one hand, it looks like its going to be super mega badass (at least as far as the visuals are concerned), but I can’t for the life of me see Nicole Kidman playing Mrs. Coulter. Not that I hate her or anything, but from watching the preview she just doesn’t quite fit (despite her reputation of playing a good bitch/villainess). But like I can really say anything from watching her be on the screen for a few seconds at a time.
I’ve also been hearing some disapproval from fans, though not nearly as much from fellow Lord of the Rings fans when the three new movies came out (complaining up a storm regarding the sudden explosion of the LotR fandom and the fact that they cut out “important” scenes. For Christ’s sake, if they included the scenes many of them have mentioned, each movie would’ve been a trilogy of movies all in themselves). Some of the His Dark Materials fans are having some of the same concerns as did the ones for LotR. While I like that the Philip Pullman fandom is relatively small, the possibility that it’ll grow after the film’s release does not disturb me too much.
But the thing that really DID disturb me is that the filmmakers are supposedly cutting out the dark, heavy elements and the religious commentary out of the story (which is, quite frankly, what the whole trilogy is about apart from the wormholes/parallel worlds, talking animal spirits and polar bears, and witches). The reason behind this is that they want to avoid extreme Catholics and ultra-conservative Americans from stirring up shit and coming after their asses.
Seriously, has this country gotten so PC that no one is allowed to be honest anymore?
I’m hoping that all of that is just a rumor. It would truly be a shame if all they did was reduce the trilogy to another sugar-coated Chronicles of Narnia-esque story. Though, now that I think about it, His Dark Materials can in some ways be considered to be the opposite of Narnia as far as its hidden message goes.
Besides, I want my gruesome armored polar bear fights, DAMMIT.
I know I’ve been uber protective of the His Dark Materials trilogy since reading the first chapter of the first book, but I think I’m willing to go see the film even if it turns out to be only eye candy. Can’t help but be curious…
