This episode is so made of win! It left me breathless and on the edge of my chair and a half. (Yes, I have one of those!)
Shawn and Gus-what a friendship these two have. I've always adored this relationship from the get-go. We know how much Gus would do for Shawn, even if it's somewhat begrudgingly, but in this episode Burton Guster was absolutely awesome in supporting Shawn. The roles were switched. Shawn, usually the quirky, funny guy of the two, gets serious and Gus takes on the comic role. All because Shawn asked him to in a difficult situation.
Some of Gus' stuff:
"Whipped butter. Maple syrup. What?"
"I'm huge next to this plane. I'm like King Kong! Roar!"
The Michael Jackson impersonation.
"It's over Shawn. Let it go."
And finally, sitting in the back seat on Shawn's date with Abigail.
Also, Buzz was great in the little time he was on screen. I'm hoping that Sage Brockelbank gets more screen time, because there is potential there.
Buzz stuff:
Lassiter: MCNAB!
Buzz: (right behind Lassiter) YESSIR?
Lassiter: (jumps then mumbles)Dammit.
Lassiter and O'Hara high five. Buzz goes in for a high five but is left hanging. Poor guy!
And how sweet was Henry in this episode? Freaking out about Shawn getting involved with playing Yang's game at the beginning, basically ordering Shawn not to do it. I loved that scene.
Shawn: I'm aware of your child rearing philosophy, but I'm not 27 anymore. I'm a grown man.
And when Henry saw Madeleine in the car with the bomb strapped to her hands, that look on his face just slays me. Then to top THAT off when he looks up and sees Shawn staring off at the car where Yang is sitting? I was done.
Then there was the hugging and the "two most important people in my life" line. Corbin, you rock good sir!
As for Shawn? He OWNED this episode. Absolutely OWNED it. That scene in the office? My jaw was on the floor. I'm SO glad I got to see Roday do some angst for once. Yelling and shoving the chair over and what he said to Jules about when a psycho killer calls her out, and the pom poms, and Roday shaking his head from side to side while gritting his teeth...just GAH!!! That was so good, it hurt MY feelings! And I LOVED it! Then Lassiter comes back at Shawn with a "SCREW YOU SPENCER! WE DON'T NEED YOU!" and I was all HOLY CRAP! Just a fan-freaking-tastic scene altogether.
And HOLY SPENSTAR can Roday run!
I also enjoyed Jimmi Spencer as Mary the profiler. Just creepy enough to make you wonder things about him but comical enough that I actually want to see this guy again.
Now about the Shules. Yes, the Shules. In my opinion, it was perfect. It set the pace for their relationship in the future. Shawn decides to get serious about dating someone and chooses Abigail (with some goading from Gus). At the very end, he is on his date with Abigail when Jules approaches him, gives this great speech about "the important things, the richest things are not easy to come by" and asks him out. Maggie played this so well, with heartfelt sincerity tempered with serious "I'm into you" look. Shawn then responds by saying she has "horrible timing" and explains that he is here with Abigail. She tells him to get out there and kisses him on the cheek, then rubs the lipstick off. James was just priceless during that, with his eyes closed, hardly breathing. He apologizes for snapping at her earlier and she leaves. He continues on to Abigail (and Gus) and the date.
The way I see it is this: this is exactly what Shules needs! No, they aren't together---yet. Juliet kept Shawn and his advances at arms length the past 3 years. NOW she sees what kind of person Shawn is after everything that has happened. NOW she sees that he's not just this goofy, good-looking guy who has "psychic spasms" at the precinct, or makes silly inane 80's references out of the blue, or thrills in irritating the hell out of Lassiter, or sets his own best friend up for embarrassment in any given situation. NOW she sees that he is loyal, caring, he CAN be serious, loves his mother, and CAN take responsibility for his various relationships. The fact that he didn't just leave Abigail AGAIN on a first date and go with Jules is an important factor in keeping Juliet interested in Shawn. She sees that he CAN keep his promises and be a responsible adult. Not that he wasn't these things before, but Shawn has never been in these scary situations before. The closest thing was when Gus and Mira were held hostage at the winery. These "traits" of Shawn are just now becoming "noticeable" to her. And by just now, I mean the past couple of episodes.
I do feel that other things can happen leading up to them getting together, like Juliet getting serious with another man and Shawn staying with Abigail (at least for a few episodes) and each other reacting to those relationships. Maybe one of them gets hurt (which would please the whump craving in me!). Maybe, later on in the season, Henry notices whats going on and he and Shawn actually have a heart to heart about it. They've already talked about Henry's dating and how to treat a woman. Maybe they could switch this time. Shawn would listen because, besides Abigail, he really cares for Jules.
Shawn is changing in Juliet's eyes and in mine too. I don't want Shawn to lose that carefree fun loving spirit, and I don't think he will, but I think his responsible, caring, loyal side will be more noticeable, be more constant, and will keep Jules "hooked."
Anyway, WOW. I've never posted this much before! I just had to get it all out though.
*sniffles* I miss my Psych already....
