Had an awesome weekend in Philadelphia, at Jane Austen Con ’09. It’s pretty much like any other con, except that the demographics are reversed; older and almost exclusively female. (Seriously guys, if you’re looking to meet a nice she-nerd, just get yourself a military uniform from the Napoleonic wars and go to a JASNA meeting.) Instead of a rave set to techno remixes of anime themes, there was a Ball with traditional country dancing. Though it’s not as different as you’d think; in both cases the end result seems to be a bunch of girls dancing in a big circle around a pile of their purses and uncomfortable shoes. There was a dealers room (mostly books and costume supplies), and plenty of panel discussions, of course; the theme for this year was siblings, which proved to be a good one, as they abound in JA’s work. There was also a wist room and a costume promenade. Come to think of it, the only thing it was really missing was video rooms; I guess they’re assuming that people will have watched the film versions on their own time already? Still, I should suggest that a group viewing can be fun. Plus, you could do a MST3K version of the bad ones! Like the 1999 Mansfield Park! (Worst. Book adaptation. Ever.)
When I got back though, I had some disappointing news. I had finally found a new nanny job, and a good one too, in a great location, but they called and said that their current nanny has decided not to leave after all, so they don’t need me. Well, it explained the suspiciously long time they’d taken to check my references, at least. I’d begun to wonder if there was video of me doing karaoke floating around on youtube, or something, when in reality they simply weren’t sure if their current nanny was really leaving or not.
