Uh.. Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner or something of that whisker. It's from Atlus, you're in a tribe fighting to survive and shit happens and you turn into representations of Hindu dieties and eat the flesh of your enemies AND THEY WONDER WHY I AVOID THIS GAME. It's also very full of gay.

Your characters are this team of mercenaries who are fighting an endless war in a post-apocalyptic setting and everyone has fabulous guns which they look really hot shooting. And then this creepy squidgy thing lands in your territory and explodes and everyone goes insane and turns into demons and starts devouring each other. And then the game starts.

It's brilliant and dark and creepy in a way that I haven't seen any other RPGs do, and the characters are just such utter love. If you can track it down at a reasonable price (the first one's out of print as seems to happen a lot with Atlus) it is really, really worth it.

If you have a Gamecube and like crack, I'd suggest Tales of Symphonia, Windwaker (not an rpg, but it's Zelda? ♥), and Baten Kaitos (prettiest game ever!). :DDD
