"I am going to be at work like I always am," said Reiji without looking up, "because of the clients who have suddenly realized they have no warm body to spend Christmas Eve with. Naoya is going to spend it at home with the cat, doing his homework."
"I thought he was coming to the house," said Kiichi, looking wide-eyed and innocent.
"Not after last year. Oh hell no."
"He had a wonderful time last year," said Kiichi. "He learned the true meaning of Christmas."
"He couldn’t look me in the eye for a week."
"It was educational. Customs of other lands."
"There were antlers, Kiichi."
"He told you about the antlers?"
"No," said Reiji. "Haruomi did. You are not corrupting Naoya’s innocence any further. Haruomi agrees."
"If Naoya has any innocence left to corrupt, I think Big Brother needs to have a talk with you," said Kiichi, irrepressibly. He held up a hand. "All right, I know what you mean." He stopped. "He looked so cute though," he said, wistfully. "Are you sure you can’t take the night off? You could wear a Santa hat and he could sit on your lap and you can ask him if he’s been a good boy this year --"
"OUT."
"But I didn’t tell you where you’d wear the Santa hat! And you could pull it off and say, ‘Santa’s got a present for you, little boy!’ and --"
"Oh, my God," said Reiji. "I am not listening because I would have to kill myself if I was. Out!"
Kiichi dragged himself to the door, pouting. "But don’t you feel sorry for Naoya? All alone on Christmas Eve?"
"He’s got schoolwork," said Reiji callously.
