pairing name conventions and pairings

Oct 12, 2005 12:43

So I was thinking about pairing name conventions and being annoyed at the younger fans because I am allowed after five years, as long as I don't actually hurt them. The thing is that a lot of W-fen come into JP fandoms and -- I know what I am talking about, because I did the same damn thing -- don't understand the logic of the pairing name ( Read more... )

The Gundam Wing "numbers" game came about from the model numbers of the mechs. Wing is 01, Deathscythe 02, et cetera. Once you get out of the five pilots, thou', I have no frikkin' clue.

It's also analogous with their names:
Hiiro (Heero) / 1 - the "hi" of his name originates from 一 . At least, that's what I recall seeing somewhere but I was a fan of this back in, oh, 1999? x.x;

Duo / 2- the english meaning of the word "duo"

Trowa / 3 - Stretching here but he's 3 somehow. I guess it's the "Tr" in his name? :P

Quatre / 4 - like "duo" it's easy to see the correlation with the number 4

Wufei / 5 - the first syllable of his name is the Chinese 五 (wu)

I always found it easier to point people to the mech model numbers because I could never remember how Heero = 1. *amused* (You would think it would be some variation of 'ichi'.)

The "hi" = 1 probably comes from the counting system you hear sometimes "hi, fu, mi..."
The pronunciation of Trowa = "trois" being French for 3.

And Treize is 13 because, well, treize is thirteen in French. No one else gets numbered as far as I know. No one's being arbitrary here, the numbers really were built into the canon.

My only other comment (to Meg) is that I see S x S meaning Syaoran x Sakura all the time. Or did when I was in the fandom. I don't think you can really generalize.

Generally I think conventions are conventions until someone thinks of a funny pun. XD

Actually, two of the female characters have numberish names too (or, I guess, they -could-, although I don't know if they are, fandom's scary and all). Lady Une (one, again) and Noin (nine, I think?). But if that's reflected in fandom or not, I can't say.

So Une plus Zechs equals Noin? Heero plus Trowa plus Quatre plus Wufei equals Treize? XD

Poor Sally, she must feel so left out.

Lady Une is usually numbered as 11, actually. Not sure why. Zechs is 6. And yep, Sally, Hilde and Relena are pretty much the only characters without numbers.
