So.

Robin Hobb's rant about fic.

.... What the fuck?I will say if I ever get something original published it would be stupid of me to howl if there's fic about it. I will also say that I'd probably have to let the word go out that Nobody Tells Me About It, I Don't Ask About It ( Read more... )

fanfic, rants

It seems to me, after reading her rant (and yours, aha), that the fanfiction Hobb was talking about were mostly the really bad ones. The reasons she lists against fanfiction are also pretty fair, if only in connection with the badly written fanfics. She made it pretty clear that money isn't the main problem about copyright (which is what you ended up ranting about), and I have to respect her protectiveness over her own creations. A lot of time, thinking, and research goes into creating an original world and deciding what to do with it, and having a fanficcer rewrite the ending you so carefully put out must be, at the least, exasperating. When someone does that to your writing, you feel like they missed the point of your story altogether, in what you chose to write and not write.

Granted, I don't stand entirely by her view, but I can see how she could be so incensed. Bad fanfiction tends to do that to you. You yourself have ranted many times about the horrible horrible things you find in FF.net. Think of how some people really pervert the originl works, and imagine if someone took your own fanfiction and decided to do something with that (which, I have a feeling, has probably been done before...), then you'd probably be mad enough to want people to stop too.
