So there's this hilarious and depressing Teen Wolf fic trope, that has popped up and annoyed me so badly that I have complained about it three times on twitter that I could find. I'm sure Fic Canary's bitched about it too but I haven't gone looking though those archives.
But Meg, you say, this fandom is full of so many hilarious and depressing tropes, how can you find one to specially annoy you?
THAT, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, IS BECAUSE IT IS THE ONE WHERE STILES AND DEREK ARE BONING, AND NOT ONLY DOES THE AUTHOR TALK ABOUT HOW DEREK IS 'THE OLDER MALE' AND STILES IS 'THE TEEN' AND BASICALLY MAKE MEG HAVE TERRIBLE FLASHBACKS TO SOME REALLY ILL-ADVISED DOWNLOADS OF SPECIAL MANGA, DEREK INSISTS ON CALLING STILES THINGS LIKE 'BABY BOY', 'PUP' OR 'KID'.
And I just. I have run out of cans, you guys, because this fandom.
Look, it's not that I don't enjoy a good age-kink fic, or where there's a size difference, or whatever. It's just that I am getting irrationally annoyed by this (like, okay, I got more flaily over the latest edition of this stinking trope than I did when later on I found out someone had gone there with Crazy Werewolf Biology and also Derek's nipples) and I couldn't figure out why.
THEN I DID. NOW YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO ME EXPLAIN IT. READY?
IT'S OUT OF CHARACTER.
It's not even that it's out of Derek's character (and it is, for so many different reasons that I will not stop to list but include 'not even in line to be Alpha until even his crazy uncle died', 'is terrified by being responsible for people', and ending with 'probably does not want to feel like Creepy Aunt Kate, even in a loving relationship, and in fact if boning Stiles is actively attempting to pretend there is no age difference whatsoever'), but -- dudes! Dudes! It's totally, creepily, hilariously, completely out of character for Stiles to put up with this shit!
Stiles' entire thing is that he wants to be responsible for people! He takes care of people! That is what he does! dfl;adfjdsa;l Sorry feelings, okay look.
So like, in 12Kingdoms, there's a very popular and pretty much canon pairing where they do have that adult-child dynamic going on. And it works for them because a) Taiki goes through all this terrible shit and -- the shit hasn't stopped yet, because Japanese light novel authors hate you and love to eat your delicious sanity and also write slower than I do -- is comfortable with and feels validated by being doted on, by being someone's precious darling, by having Gyousou-sama protect him and cuddle him, and we live in hope that this will happen, forever, when the next fucking book finally comes out.
Also b) if Taiki didn't like it, Taiki has giant demon guardians that will eat Gyousou's soul and c) if Gyousou treats him wrong he will literally get sick and die because God will strike him with the plague unless he abdicates his throne and has nothing more to do with Taiki.
Good series. Part of it is in English but with Tokyopop kind of dying I'm fuzzy on the details of where to find it. ANYWAY. Example of a couple where that whole my precious darling baby let me cuddle you and bring you to copious orgasm my sweet pet works for them, given.
STILES, tho, I think Stiles would make a pretty good attempt at breaking someone's nose if they told him in all seriousness that he was their baby boy, and I really don't think they would get within ten feet of his wiener, like, ever again. Stiles' whole entire thing is that he DOESN'T WANT TO BE A CHILD. He's tired of it! He stopped being a child when his mother died and he's just waiting for the rest of the world to catch up and notice it. He doesn't want to be protected, doesn't want to admit to needing to be protected, and usually is actively trying to protect other people instead.
Stiles wouldn't feel special and loved by being doted on like a child. He'd feel special and loved by being an equal partner in a relationship.
IN CONCLUSION: UGH, GUYS, THAT FIC TROPE.
