Okay, I’ve got a full review of Hourglass for you now... ;-)
THE CHARACTERS
-Jack-
Jack was wonderfully in-character, and I loved him all the way through - my heart was breaking every time he reverted to Mad!Jack... *sniffles*
His past, and his whole manner (even when his mind went) was so... awesome that I am utterly speechless over it! Rowan and Frances: made of WIN.
-Ianto-
Oh, how to even make a start on Ianto? He was witty, serious, practical, dreamy, dark and adorable all in turn. Which is just proof of how awesome your writing is, as you conveyed it all without making any of it seem like an effort. I take my hat off to you. *bows*
I could totally understand his “Don’t tell me you love me, because then it’ll hurt too much” thing, even if I didn’t like it - and the differing of opinion only served to convince me of how well you wrote our favourite Welshman.
-Gwen-
You made me appreciate Gwen in a whole new light with Hourglass. You portrayed Gwen and Jack’s relationship as it should be shown, and for that I am eternally grateful - they are brilliant as best friends, but not love-interests!
She and Rhys were great, too! :-D
-Rowan-
I know that Rowan wasn’t an actual character per se, but I want to comment on him all the same... he’s a stroke of genius; it’s a nice idea to think of Jack being shy about approaching one of his crushes, and I “awww”ed a little when Jack said that Rowan had been completely straight.
-Gray-
Clone!Gray!!!! Awesome!!!! Genius!!! The inner fluffer (or not so inner, as it seems!) wants Jack and Ianto to raise him... ;-) You do realise that you’ll be besieged with requests for a sequel, right?
-Hart-
You actually managed to make me hate John! I’ve always been rather fond of him, despite his craziness, sadistic-ness etc; you managed to make me wish him dead, and then be pleased when he did die. But Ianto’s revenge (granulating him and putting him in an hourglass) does seem rather cruel and twisted! (Still love it, though.)
His desperateness for Jack comes over so clearly, and his cruelty towards everybody... gah, I really wanted him dead! *goes off to watch KKBB and learn to re-love him*
-Eleth-
Awww... Eleth... You made me so sad when she died, and then to tell us that she deceived them all! I can’t quite reconcile that idea with her character, so I’m with Gwen.
JACK AND IANTO’S RELATIONSHIP
I certainly found myself enjoying the way that you chose to write it; the support and caring is there exactly as I see it, and even though Ianto hated it when Jack said “I love you” (which rather upset me) I can so see Ianto doing that!
I’m afraid that I rather skipped/skimmed through the sex parts, however, as I don’t feel old enough to comfortably read... so I can’t really give you feedback on that! Sorry!
There was a definite growth in their relationship, which was lovely to read - I must sit down and re-read the entire fic from start to finish sometime so that I can appreciate it some more.
You added layers to it, without making it objectionably difficult, making it a fantastic read! I liked the way that it wasn’t all chocolates and roses with them - there were the dark moments, there were the times that they didn’t get along quite as well as might be hoped, and there were times that Ianto only had his faith in Jack to keep him going.
THE POISON / THE ALIENS
The poison that made them lose their mind was just an amazing idea - I’m so jealous that I didn’t think of it! ;-P Especially the whole “losing their sex-drive” part - Jack without his sex-drive would be like the sun without the moon - just isn’t right!
The aliens were great, too - I would go into more detail but my brain really doesn’t want to quite kick into gear right now... :-S Just know that I liked them.
THE PACING / THE PLOT
The length of it was perfect - every time we thought that there might be a conclusion on one part of the story, another twist happened! The ending was brilliant, and I’m now hungry for more of your stuff! (I’ve read all your other TW fics, so keep in mind that I’m sitting here tapping my foot impatiently! Nah, only kidding. Genius can’t be rushed.)
