Warren Ellis Is A Charlatan

It's not his fault - You made him the 'Internet Jesus'

But Warren Ellis is not the Messiah

He's not even a prophet

(If you haven't figured out yet that all fiction ... especially science fiction ... is out of date before you read it ... Then do us all a favour and stop reading anything ... everBut leave the poor ( Read more... )

Your last LJ post is a parting shot at someone who's unlikely to be affected by what you've written? Dude, I expected better!

Wasn't aimed at Ellis himself, but ...

a) the legions of fawning fanboyz and grrrlz who do him no good other than to enable him to put food on his family's table - No bad thing in and of itself, but the messianic fervour with which they drool over his very existence, never mind his every written word, frankly makes my flesh creep ... They are the very masses who put The Smiler in power and they'll desert, if not actually turn on, Ellis just as quickly when they find the least reason to do so

b) everyone for being fucking spectators in their own lives! - One of the things I disagree with Ellis over is the wond'rous nature of modern day information and media feeds ( ... )

I understand what you're saying mate, overall I agree. LJ/Facebook/twitter (GOD how much do I hate twitter??) can very often be the snake eating it's own tail.

Attacking the passivity of it all is a worthwhile assault, but how far can you attack the background noise of blogging via blogging/comments itself before you're just participating? (If we're still debating 15 comments after this one then I think we've derailed into that...)

... blah. Would like to meet up with you some time in the near future mate, talk for real instead of on here. Family stuff means my making ATOM isn't going to happen though so we'll have to come up with something else!

And, besides, you, yourself, aren't exactly the target 'audience' of that particular post - You actually do stuff and make things happen with your VJing ... You're the subject of Ellis' musings, not the target audienceWell, yes and no. I worry I talk a lot more about doing these things than actually doing them, but on balance I am doing the the 9-5, father/husband-hood and everything ( ... )

Yes, the problem of how far can you attack the background noise of blogging via blogging/comments itself before you're just participating is the major reason why I stopped doing LJ nearly five years ago

Anyway, need to chat to you about VJing, so it's a date ... (just don't know when yet ;) )

We'll manage to work something out - Just not fucking Whitby Spooky Kid Week! ... (Stopped doing that even longer ago [1])

lol you'd be lucky to catch me up in Whitby, let alone at the Goffic weekend... think I last went to that 2 years ago when B was <6 mths old. After finding it pretty awkward with little guy in tow for just the daytime stuff, and just general goffic reactions ranging mainly from neutral to negative to little ones, we decided not to bother the next time, and the next etc...

I'm amazed you kept going so long in the first place

Yes, there are a few people it'd be good to see, but then they could always come down here and visit, rather than expecting me to traipse all the way up to Whitby, just because "That's where we go"

But they don't, do they? ... Nor do they call, email or even text (and my number hasn't changed in ten years now) ... So fuck 'em!

In fact, to my memory, the only good thing to arise out of my ever having gone to one of the very few (three?) of those events I attended ...(as I said, because my friends were going and encouraged me to join them) ... was meeting you and Joolz

I think I went one more time after that (two at the outside) and never bothered again

Too far away ... Too expensive ... Too full of goths ... Too boring [1]

... just too bloody much of a waste of time, energy and money

Also, tangenting back... I read comics, and I read one that Ellis writes right now (Astonishing X-men). I don't get how people worship him to be honest, his dialogue's predicatable, and left unchecked by editorial staff he always writes a chainsmoking brit into the story (Pete Wisdom in Excalibur in the 90's, created solely as an avatar for himself that wound up going out with Kitty Pryde...)

He does have a tough act to follow though, he picked up after Joss Whedon, who had a run of 25 issues from issue #1, and did more character progression on 30+ year old characters than had been done in the last 20 years. IMO Whedon deserved a fanboi following for that, let alone any of his myriad own creations and characters !

That's the point

I think Ellis is a very good writer - You keep turning the pages, which is all that a good writer needs to achieve

And I like the way he says stuff - It appeals to my inner angsty adolescent ;)

But the concepts are not earth shatteringly new ... His stuff isn't groundbreaking - Although, having been steeped in that particular subculture for nigh on twenty years now, I may not be the best person to judge what's groundbreaking to the masses

I just find the way he has effectively been turned into his own creation by his fans really disturbing
