Will I ever see 24?

Dec 20, 2009 14:35

I was seventeen when Ladytron had they're hit. "They only want you when you're seventeen. When you're twenty-one. You're no fun." When I turned 21 that joke wasn't funny any more. (At least I had a better 17 then Janis Ian, that song is such a heart ache.) At 18 I went runnin´ in outer space with Alice Cooper who I never really liked. Stooges are the best obviously. "Last year I was 21 I didn't have a lot of fun, and now I'm gonna be 22 I say oh my and a boo-hoo" are words that are strangely comforting. "I was 21 years when I wrote this song. I'm 22 now but I won't be for long. People ask me when will I grow up to understand, why the girls I knew at school are already pushing prams?" Lyrics from Kirsty MacColls beautiful New England was running through my head long before my 23rd birthday. This year all I had left was Gangsta's Pradise witch was my favourite song when I was 9. I got the single for my 10th birthday and it's still one of the best presents I've ever had. Charlotte found great pleasure in the realization that I still knew all the lyrics to it, she used to make me rap it to people as an icebreaker, now I do it willingly. We have drawn much fun from Coolio and have made this fabulous singing version of it. "I'm twenty-three now, but will I live to see twenty-fow'? The way things are goin' I don't know." And now we know. I'm twenty four, and popular music no longer caters to my needs. Time to grow up.
