I spent this easter in Venice with my mother. It's been gorgeous, eating spinach pies at the edge of a canal, boat rides every day and even encountering rays of stray sunshine.(My deathly white completion having gained a tint of rose noticeable to the generous onlooker.)
But there have been obstacles, so many obstacles. None of our credit cards worked, and our first full day was a Sunday so no banks where open. We spent that day on Lido, where our hotel was. A pretty little thing as islands go but infuriating to be shipwrecked on just the same.
We didn't notice the earthquakes, not surprising that we didn't feel them (500 km away), but strange we didn't get more of the country in morning vibe.
Venice rocks earthquake or not, I still feel that gentile swaying that comes even on land after spending time at sea. I felt most comfortable on the boats, after all they are supposed to float on water, city's are not.
I've been reading Casanovas autobiography to get in that venetian mood. That crazy libertine, reaping and seducing (one cant always tell the difference) his way in and out of trouble. It's been abridged buy the translators who thus far have omitted two manage a trois scenes. (I don't think they quite grasped the allure of this novel.) Not to say there isn't copulation galore but if they had left out one of the sex scenes with the nun they could have fitted in the manage a trois with the nun and the french ambassador that turned in to a "a quatre" (if you ever wondered what that was called) when Casanova jealous child bride joined in. Ah the olden days.

while taking a break under this bridge I made use of my limited french. a passing gondolier told his passengers it had been a gift from Napoleon. I think.
