Technology: Putting My eBooks on the Kindle Fire

Jan 04, 2012 14:50

Sure this is very off topic for the group but it is about technology and I'm all about helping people with that. I discovered this method when I realized it wasn't going to be a matter of moving them to my Kindle Fire. I mean what do I do with all those eBooks I already had in one format or another from deals, freebies, etc. The answer is you convert them.

Dilemma: Maybe you are like me and have had eBook for a long while before actually having that coveted eReader. You've picked up you favorite books for very cheap or they were freebies from authors. But they are PDFs and EPUB (or other formats) and you can't read them off your Kindle.

Here is the thing. You can read them and in Kindle Format too.

Things You'll Need:
Calibre, Cable to connect your Kindle to your computer (which you can find for rather cheap at Big Lots as a lot of cell phones use the same hook up; I'm using my cell phone cord)

1. Download: Go to http://calibre-ebook.com/ and download their eBook Management Program (portable one works best).

2. Format: Once you've installed Calibre and have it running (it should have prompted you as to where to store your Library - My Documents>etc),  add all your pdf or epub books into the system and then convert them into MOBI format. These will save themselves to a folder on your computer under the authors name and then by book (in case you need to search them out).

3. Plug your Kindle into the computer. (Fire users will be prompted on their screen to open their Kindle with the slide feature and then it will show you it is connected to your computer.)

4. Calibre should recognize your device or you may have to set it up. A send to Device button will appear at the top of Calibre. Choose the books you want on your Kindle (mobi format) and click the "Send to Device" button.

5. Wait for them to be checked marked in Calibre as "On Device" and then at the top click the arrow next to "Device" and click "Eject Device". Then on your Kindle there will be a "Disconnect" button on the screen (Touch and Fire). Tap this and wait for the Kindle to refresh before removing it from the hook up.

6. See if it worked: Click on Books. Your MOBI file should be listed under the books section, though if it is not go back to Home and check the Docs section (as I've had a few of my books go there instead of the Books Section). Now you can read you books like you would a Kindle book.

More: Sometimes your Kindle doesn't refresh like it should so I will hold the power button so that I can reset the system which should refresh your Kindle.

Feel free to share this with anyone you know as I was hard pressed to find this solution on the net.
