So here's the thing. I want to work out on a regular basis. I feel sort of vaguely lethargic and unhealthy all the time and I drink too much coffee. I want to have natural energy and I want to be proud of how I look

What I have found in the past is that self-motivation for good exercise is hard to come by. Especially to start. Once you get into a good routine however, you become accustomed to the endorphin/adrenal response and begin to look forward to it. Tricks I have used to get myself to the gym until I want to be there.
1) Music. Get a good mp3 list/mix CD and only listen to it at the gym. I Like it because good music can really drive you that extra mile on a machine.
2)Photos. Flood your livingspace with target photos. Something that motivates you. Nothing like constant reminders that you shouldnt be sitting around doing nothing.
3)Find someone to go to the gym with. Does David have a membership to the same gym? if so find when he goes and go with him. If not, when he goes to his gym, you go to yours.
4)Eliminate the concept of later. Tonight, tomorrow, in a while. Pick concrete times (i.e. MWF 8pm) and schedule them like you would schedule a doctors appt.
5)Do something stupid. I will sometimes get off a stop early on the T, and walk the extra distance. just to get a little work out in where I otherwise wouldnt. It's also pretty embarrassing when you get to the restaurant and you are winded from jogging 4 blocks.
as for rewards? what about a new book?
and finally, any time you start a new workout it is extremely important you consider your diet. New activities mean new dietary needs. Sit down and think about your current habits, read up on what you need. Figure out a change, and make sure you do it. Poor nutrition will hold back and body form changes that you were hoping for, and will also increase your chances for injury.
