For New Year's Eve, it is a tradition in Korea for people to go to church at midnight, so they can start the year with God. I thought this was a rockin' idea so I asked David if I could come. Originally he said I should probably go to a Catholic church, not a Protestant one, but after a while he invited me after all.

So, I was at church at midnight, with David and his mom and Dad. After that I went back to their house in Ansan and we had dinner and I met David's sister, whose name eludes me since I haven't seen it written down. David's mom is a really good cook.

The next morning we all had breakfast together and for some reason David's dad wanted to discuss international politics...so that was how I spent my morning, with David rapidly translating.

We had originally planned to go to a mountainous national park the next day but David's sister said it was too cold and that we should do something warmer. So we tried to go to the National Museum, because I really like it and David's never been. (He's never been to Changdeokgung either, he's never been ice skating, he's never tried Mexican food...I told him, "David, we have to spend more time together!" He said, "That's exactly what I hoped you would say.") But anyway, we go there, and the museum was closed!! There were lots of sad people there looking at the sign.

So we spent the better part of the afternoon in the Gangnam branch of Kyobo bookstore, which is the biggest bookstore in Seoul. We read Korean children's books aloud, we drank coffee, and then we just sat down on the floor and read for a while in the English-language cookbook section.

Then we had potato-bacon pizza per my request, because of the Slavkovsky family tradition of pizza and sausage at midnight.

So. It was a good day.

Happy New Year, everyone!!

새해 복 많이 받으세요!!
