So, today is Pepero (Bbaebbaero) Day. It is a PURELY COMMERCIAL HOLIDAY, which, I gotta tell you, I LOVE. There is no, oh, this is a holiday about LOVE or FAITH or FAMILY. Bah. It is about COOKIES!
On Pepero Day, lovers, friends, and schoolmates give each other pepero sticks, which are a a kind of sticklike cookie dipped in chocolate (very similar to pocky).
Some brilliant marketing mind came up with the idea around 1994, when he decided that 11/11 should be Pepero Day, since all the one's look like Pepero sticks. There is a legend about middle school girls in Busan (the second-biggest Korean city) gave each other Pepero sticks so they could grow "tall and slender" like the Pepero. But most people agree it's just a marketing scheme.
Anyway, I gave all my students one or two Pepero sticks and a number of them gave me sticks or boxes of the sticks. There were displays outside every convenience store, with folks with tambourines and girls shouting "It's Pepero Day! Buy some Pepero!"
David and I gave each other Pepero, and a bunch of my students gave them to me also. There is quite the array of options:
And now I have as much chocolate-covered cookie goodness as I could possibly want.
