http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23847511/ so i was reading the 'news' today and i started reading this article. i can not begin to express how angry and sad this story made me. i actually yelled at my lap top. i scared the dog. the actions themselves, the slaying of a young boy for expressing the truth of his soul is one heartbreaking thing. how this story tries to tell the 'facts' is an entirely other, extremely angry making thing.
Larry King was a gay eighth-grader who used to come to school in makeup, high heels and earrings. And when the other boys made fun of him, he would boldly tease them right back by flirting with them.
That may have been what got him killed.
NO. i'm sorry to whatever AP hack wrote this article but that is NOT in fact what got him killed. what got him killed is an environment of hate and intolerance that pervades american culture. what got him killed is a public school system in which over two third of gay students report being harrassed and threatened and most of them have missed school because of it. what got him killed is the idea that if someone tells you they have a crush on you it's acceptable to respond violently. what got him killed is the sick hatred that eats at the heart of the ideal of this nation.
nothing about what happened to Larry King, who was an 8th grader for christ's sake, is his fault. everything about what happened is our fault. it rests on the shoulders of every single one of us who lets a kid get called a faggot and says nothing, it rests on the shoulders of every one of us who fails to speak, to act, to challenge. we are the adults and our children should not be fighting our war.
this just makes me sick.
