Nobody's driving to Anchorage this weekend, right ...?

Flood waters wash out Alaska Railroad, parts of Parks Highway. The place where it's washed out (actually down to one lane and in danger of washing out, not 100% closed) is in the Nenana River canyon north of the park entrance, which I have to say is scary enough to drive through even NORMALLY. The idea of driving through the canyon with the river ( Read more... )

Erk...no, not THIS weekend, but we are heading up on Thursday. Hopefully this will be sorted out by then!

Yeah, that's a scary stretch at the best of times...and here I was worrying about snow in the passes, I hadn't for a moment thought about flooding!

Assuming we make it in one piece, I'll be doing a booth at the Bad Girls of the North show. Come say hi?

Egad. I really hope things have improved by then, although I was just talking to my mom tonight and I had no idea how bad the flooding in Southcentral actually was. Road closures and evacuations all over the Matanuska and Susitna drainages, from what I hear! My grandmother drove up to Trapper Creek yesterday on business, and apparently, while the road is passable, it's pretty close to being flooded at Montana Creek and a couple of other places.

... though I still can't imagine you'll be completely unable to get here, especially since the water has nearly a week to go down and repairs on the Parks will obviously be a priority. And yeah, I'll totally come out for that!

So apparently the Richardson is closed due to flooding as well.

We were considering that as a go-around, but I guess not.

We may be looking into plane fare and air cargo if worst comes to worst.

*THIS* after a two-week stretch of repeated power outages, terrifying wind storms and non-stop rain. Nice Autumn were having, huh?

I *think* the Richardson closure is somewhere near Valdez (though my information might be out of date?), and the section from Glennallen to Fairbanks is okay. If the Glenn along the Matanuska River is okay (and I haven't heard about any damage there), I think you might be all right in that direction.

Still, yeah, this is absolutely ridiculous at this time of year. Weirdly, here in Fairbanks we've been having a really warm, mild autumn -- we got enough wind to do a little damage, but nothing like you guys were getting.
