I like the general structure of this page. Like I've said before, I think one of the strengths of Raven's Children is that I was willing to experiment, probably a lot more so than I am now. I don't know if I would try a page like this now -- there are 16 panels on it! But it's actually pretty effective.
As mentioned last week, I'm deeply uncomfortable with how I chose to handle this particular aspect of the storyline (the rape of the slave girls). But again, it's not the fact that I did it at all that bothers me; it's that it needed to have more attention paid to it than a couple of pages that don't really focus on the victims at all.
A little political background context: this is dealt with in more depth later, but the Raven Tribe and other tribes in the area have always practiced a sort of extremely small-scale slavery -- slaves (usually war captives) generally end up being adopted into the tribe. What has happened within the last 20 years or so, however -- the change Kafal is talking about -- is that it's become commodified. The Tolshay Kahn (the invaders from the south) created this market on purpose. They started buying slaves from the tribes and encouraging them to raid each other and the farming/herding Wagaibe people on the flatland for more slaves. This is intentional on the part of the TK, to sow dissent and weaken the various groups so that the TK can take over. The whole mess was the (stupid) idea of the previous TK governor of the province.
