FDGD 2006

Hello once again. Long time, no blog. Yeah. I finally have something awesome (with pics) to blog about. This Saturday (in my attempt to have a "lay-low" weekend) I ended up going up in the mountains to Nederland and joining in the Frozen Dead Guy Days activities. Jen and her crowd wanted to go up after they took their MPRE exams (the "ethics" portion of the Bar exam) so we loaded up in my truck and headed up.

Now, for those of you who have no idea what I am talking about when I say "Frozen Dead Guy Days," here's a brief rundown. Apparently there was a scandal some years ago when it was discovered that this guy in Nederland was keeping his dead grandfather frozen in a shed out behind their house. Well, I guess there was a trial held about the legality of that and the guy won and held the right to keep his grandpa frozen in the shed. So, I suppose Nederland decided this would be a great excuse to throw a festival every year. They got Tuff Shed to sponsor it and as I witnessed, it turns out to be a pretty big hit.

Well, we arrived in time to see the end of the coffin races:

They raced two teams at a time. The teams have to carry their coffin around the track. At one point they all have to hurdle a log. Then when they reach the playground the corpse has to climb out, up the ladder, and be ready to slide down the slide once the coffin carriers have made their lap around the playground. Then it's up a hill of snow, a Chinese fire drill, and back to the finish line. I'm not kidding you, folks. In the last group that raced one team was disqualified for not doing the Chinese fire drill. Funny stuff.

Oh and random, here's the mausoleum:

We had gotten up there kind of late so I believe we missed the parade, the Grandpa Blue Balls look-alike contest, the frozen t-shirt contest, and who knows what else. Anna wanted to enter into the Brain Freeze competition so while we waited for that we grabbed a table at the 1st Street Pub and had some lunch and some yummy Moose Drool beer...

And here's Mandy and Anna looking way more sauced than they actually were:

We walked over to the cafe where the Brain Freeze was going to happen. We really shouldn't have believed the MC when he told us to come out and watch. We should have stayed inside where it wasn't freezing and snowing buckets, but we went out so we could be sure we had a good spot to get pictures of Anna. Well then, sure enough, we ended up standing around out there for about 20 minutes because the smoothie machine broke and it took forever to get everyone's drinks made. Here we are standing around looking cold - and yes, I'm just in a sweatshirt...

And there's Jen and Andy looking fairly frozen:

The MC had everyone dance and conga-line around the table to keep warm, but I don't think it helped much. One kid decided his tactic to keep warm during the competition would be a cup of jalepenos he got from the cafe. I dunno how it worked out for him, but obviously not well because he didn't win. So once everyone had 3 frozen smoothies in front of them, it was a big "cheers!" to Grandpa:

Then the drinking began. They had two minutes to drink as much of the three cups as possible. Anna managed about 1 and 1/3 I believe...

And of course, we cheered her on...

The dude who won, though, drank 2 and 1/3. Intense. I was freezing just watching.

After that we decided that Andy and I needed to see the amazement that is Lorelyn's cabin and a good thing to do would be to buy some hot chocolate, whipped cream, Bailey's and peppermint schnopps. Mmmm. So, we made pit stops to the grocery and liquor stores and then drove further up into the mountains to Eldora, where Lorelyn's place is. The amazement about her cabin is pretty much the fact that it is a tiny little place with a sitting room, kitchen and a ladder leading up to a tiny sleeping loft. It's smaller than my dorm room was and only slightly bigger than my current bedroom. It's really cute though. I can imagine it's a great place to spend the weekend or maybe the week during the summer, but girl lives there. There's a shared bathroom a few cabins away, so the only indoor plumbing Lorelyn has is the kitchen sink. It's no wonder she likes to crash on our couch so frequently and also no wonder that she thinks of our apartment, with it's indoor bathroom, as such a luxury suite. We left around 7 and I creeped down the canyon at about 30mph. With 5 of us in the car and 4-wheel drive we managed perfectly well. Andy was kind enough to DJ on my iPod the whole way down. Everyone went their seperate ways and I crashed pretty early. All in all, a great day.
