That's not all...

I know that I brought this up over the summer, but it's been something I've kept in the back of my mind. The USDA Grad School offers a certificate in Editing Practices. All told, the 5-course certificate would cost $1,875. It would include Principles of Editing for Publication; Printing, Layout, and Design; Practice in Editing; Proofreading; and my choice of Legal or Technical Writing.

Occasionally I weigh the benefits of this and other certificate programs, such as Chicago's. I think I would like the courses, and it would look great on my resume. It might even pay for itself in a year and a half, when I start sniffing around for a new job. It certainly wouldn't hurt if I wanted to freelance, although I'd still have to take a copyediting-specific course (one drawback of this program, and an advantage of Chicago's. However, I don't want to move to the windy city!)

Anyway. A certificate in editing practices might be nice. In my field, a graduate degree is not valued as much as experience, but the occasional editing class is pretty regular, I think. It might round off the ol' English & Linguistics degree quite nicely.
