i just don't see why people believe so strongly that allowing any two people that fall in love to marry is such a dangerous thing!! two people fall in love, the two want to confirm their love to everyone. it's normal. it's natural. it's life. is the concept of marriage so weak that it could be "destroyed" just based on the sex of the individuals ( Read more... )

What's even more frustrating than this opposition to marriage is the opposition to civil unions which approximate marriage. Marriage, I suppose, could be considered to be the religiously/spiritually derived version of a civil union. In this sense, structurally, it's a subset of civil union, being a specific religious type. In this case, it would make sense for the government to no longer specifically recognize marriage, but rather to recognize civil unions, of which marriage is a sub-type. Unfortunately, the religious conservatives believe that legal benefits should only be extended to those unions which conform to religious standards, thus marriage.

Except that society has co-opted marriage and completely non-religious people can get married in thoroughly non-religious ceremonies. So is marriage is so sacred that homosexuals can't be married, why is it acceptable to allow divorce to be legal? Why do we allow non-religious couples to get married? Shouldn't those also fall out of the picture? For that matter, we should be jailing women who become pregnant out of wedlock, and the men who impregnate them. And the babies, because they need to learn the lesson of their parents first hand.

I mean, gosh, if we let men marry men and women marry women, what's to stop earthworms from marrying dinosaurs? Oh, we're doomed!
