well, seeing as i never wrote my end of year post that i promised earlier, i guess i'll subsitute with an end of orientation post instead, seeing as tomorrow is the last day for the summer. i pretty much can't believe that these six weeks have flown by so fast, while at the same time have seemed to last a lifetime. i feel like just yesterday i moved into salley, with the help of a shopping cart that one of the OL's had hidden for us to use. as i settled in, i imagined what the summer could hold. i thought i had some idea of what to expect, but it has been so much more then anything i ever could have planned. intensive training was over before i knew it, 10 days filled with lots of food, life on campus practice, late nights, hall decorating, learning the ghost tour, early mornings, presentation after presentation which left me knowing much more about FSU then i ever thought i needed to, free goodies, team bonding, games of mafia and zip zap zop, red bull and stuffing 20,000 bags full of information for the students and family members that would soon be arriving in tallahassee. then the fun really started, as the whirlwind of orientation began. night zero - students arrive at salley hall. work check in, lead a floor meeting, help with the all hall meeting, maybe do a ghost tour, sleep ASAP. day one - staff meeting 7am. check in 7:30. welcome starts at 9. various duties throughout the day depending on if i had students or family members. these could consist of hearing presentations 6 times in a row and acting just as interested, or putting up signs, or standing and giving people directions (a hint - generally the third floor is above the second.) last event ends at 9 pm, on duty until at least 11. sleep ASAP. day two - staff meeting 6:30 am. breakfast 6:45. more fun things throughout the day, which would either include the thrilling world of registering for classes or the equally as fun - family member walking tour. seminole sendoff over 12:45. staff meeting until 1:30. sleep/eat/whatever. then it all starts again at 6:30 pm. but somehow in the midst of all the tedious tasks, anwering the same question 50 times (yes, garnet bucks and flex bucks are the same. no, its seperate from your suntrust account. no, the chip only works in the laundry machines. yes, your FSU card does all three of those things), sitting through "its all academic" and coming up with the most random ways to look involved, and making akward conversation with family members, i had the time of my life. continually watching a whole new group of people fall in love with florida state is amazing. helping calm family members fears about losing their baby, and making students feel accepted and excited about coming to what i consider the best place on earth is an experience i can never forget. i truly love florida state and am so happy to have had this opportunity.
i think this is the first in a series of posts, because that 6:30 staff meeting is looming closer by the minute and there is so much more to reflect on....
