A day in the life

Oct 20, 2005 22:14

So, I have set up temporary camp in Washington to do some meet and greets with other firms and some of our DC partners. Starting the day at 4:30 was less than fun.

This city continues to have an odd effect on me. I can hear the hum, just below the surface, calling me. I have change the course of my life so dramatically in the last few years, and never once looked back, but 5 minutes on 12 St. NW this morning had me wondering where we could find a house to buy. Powerful. Wild.

I have been reading a biography of John Adams, and while I understand completely why it won the Pulitzer, it has warped my perceptions of certain figures I thought I had down. I took a walk tonight before dinner and found myself standing in front of the Treasury Dept. snearing at Alexander Hamilton. I planned on going taking my lunch and sitting at the Sphinx tomorrow, but a recent chapter on his behavior during the 1800 elections makes me wonder if I'd spend all day making faces at him too. Who ever thought a statue of Albert Gallatin could bring a smile to my face? Not me. Maybe I'll hit the obelisk instead.

This is my first trip to our Washington office. It's very nice. For being our flagship office, the Boston quarters don't really stand up to our NY or DC office spaces. We'll see what the new NY space takes shape as. Our building here is an enclosed atrium with the office space wrapping around the atrium. My office here looks out across the atrim at the central artwork, a miniature scale bright yellow fire escape snaking its way down the inner wall. It's odd for art, but it has drawn my eye to it most of the day.

And now, your moment of proof of the alien occupation of the White House:

Tomorrow I'm voluntarily sitting down with partners to learn what my twiddles are doing right, what they're not and how I can hone policy to better suit the practice groups. Should be fun. Oy. But all is worth while since I get to have dinner with Teri tomorrow night. I need to find a good place for us.

Tweedle dee.
