I thought we found a good house. We were talking about it today, about how we would use the space. And then I realized, "where would I put the roll-top desk?" I have a BEAUTIFUL antique roll-top desk that my parents bought in England in the late 60s or early 70s. I went through phases in junior high and high school when I'd do my homework at it ( Read more... )

Okay, but I think there is a big utility difference between unused china and rolltop desks.

Do you like the china pattern? If so, why aren't you using the china? If not, why haven't you gotten rid of it?

Do you have another desk, or just the rolltop? Bookshelves hold stuff. So do desks that have drawers and such. Even if you don't actively use them, they have function.

Bedroom chests with tiny drawers sound neat but in practice awful, unless you have lots of things that fit well in the tiny drawers. A certain member of my household used to own a card catalog. It held CDs, badly. It was a pain to use and more of a pain to move. It was really cool. And someone else has it now. I don't know whether the pie safe and flour bin are practical or not, 'cause that depends on their sizes, shapes, etc. I used to have really cool flour bins, but they weren't functional enough and so faded away.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it makes sense to evaluate what Stuff you have that is useful, but it currently sounds like you're lumping together various levels of utility.

Your household had a card catalog?!?!?!?! I've wanted one of those ever since someone at the library I worked for in college got one as a retirement present. But I also have lots of small things that need homes.

The pie safe is actually a good size for games. The flour bin would be good for storing linens. I think, ultimately, we can work something out. But I think I will take the two matching beds and assemble the best pieces into one bed I keep, and one bed I sell. I need to find someone who can fix the box spring.

It was a really big card catalog, with 90 drawers, I think. I got it when the MIT engineering library was getting rid of all their card catalogs back in 1998. But it was a huge pain to move, so I ended up storing it in someone's garage during a move, and it stayed there. Last I heard it was being used/destroyed for some art piece.
