Alex often wished that she had the energy to hate her life, to hate what had come of justice, and ruthless men with guns, of violence and the lust for money, but she didn’t.
She still could feel the dull ache of bullet through flesh, shredding tissue, shattering bone. Especially on nights like this, when the deep cold of the Wisconsin winter seeped into her, a chill that couldn’t be conquered by a blazing fire or thick woolen sweaters.
It wasn’t the searing heat of the whiskey as it slid down her throat that brought with it a slender tendril of warmth, but finally the enveloping blanket of oblivion.
